従属節に助動詞が使われている場合、主節の動詞が過去形になれば従属節の動詞も過去形になる。
※ 過去形がある助動詞はcan, will, may(shouldはshallの過去形だが、shallの過去形として使われることはほとんどない)

I thought that I could pass the exam.
私は試験に合格すると思った。
□will
She says that she will go to the party.
彼女はパーティーに行くと言っている。
She said that she would go to the party.
彼女はパーティーに行くと言っていた。
□may
He tells me that he may come tomorrow.
彼は私に明日来るかもしれないと言っている。
He told me that he might come tomorrow.
彼は私に明日来るかもしれないと言っていた。
